Let us begin with a prayer...
I would like to thank you for inviting my husband Michael and I back
to
the Pittsburgh Marian Conference this year. I would have to admit
that
we have been on quite an emotional and spiritual roller coaster since
last September 8, the Feast of Our Lady's birth, but we will touch
on
these details a little later in the talk. I would like to thank
Dr. Sam
and the organizers of the conference for both their confidence and
faith
in us and for their courage.
I think it might be appropriate to first briefly summarize the
highpoints of what Our Lady had me share with you here in November
of
1999. In that talk I tried to develop the concept of the
'mysticism
of
the little child', drawing from the words of St. Therese of Lisieux
and
Padre Pio, as well as from some other more contemporary writers, and
from the words of Our Lady herself. In a series of several
messages
throughout 1999 Our Lady had emphasized the invitation to and the
importance of this greatly misunderstood virtue of "littleness":
Our Lady said on 4/29/99: "Little one, do not think being
insignificant
in the eyes of the world that you have little power to carry out the
designs of God's Will…..God uses your little, insignificant, and simple
ways to confound the proud and do miraculous, powerful things for
God…..Do not underestimate or belittle your gift of insignificance.
You
hold the power to change the direction of the world with God's Merciful
Love."
Then on 7/15/99 she continued: "The only way you can develop
an
intimate relationship with God Almighty is by becoming 'little'.
You
must decrease in all ways and He must increase in all ways. You
must
accept the enlightenment of your weaknesses and embrace them, for it
is
in your weaknesses that you are made powerful in the eyes of God."
And one week later on 7/22/99 she asked: "Do you understand
the
meaning
of meekness, littleness, and simplicity? Seek the answers in
these and
replace them to their lawful throne….I love you, little children, but
you need to be just that, 'little children'. It is the only way
to gain
power and rise to the top….. Do not be afraid to be 'little.' Be afraid
that you might become lost through works of evil from hidden pride."
I concluded that talk by suggesting that the mysticism of the
"little
ones" is truly within the reach of each of our hearts, yours and mine;
within the reach of our own lives, if we are open to all that the Holy
Spirit commands and inspires, and if we rest in the arms of the
Heavenly
Father in complete abandonment to Divine Providence.
At the last Pittsburgh conference I also shared with you some of the
most recent public information that Our Lady had shared regarding
Emmitsburg, MD, as the Center of her Immaculate Heart where her Son's
Divine Mercy will be unveiled, as well as some of her words concerning
the era of peace which is to follow. It was on March 9, 1995,
when Our
Lady first publicly referred to Emmitsburg as the Center of her
Immaculate Heart:
"This place (referring to Emmitsburg) is the haven of life because
it
is
the Center of my Immaculate Heart where all children seek refuge.
It
will withstand the attacks from evil because I am here with the Child
Jesus…..He humbles Himself in His majesty to come with me in the form
of
a little child offering you the invitation of life and joy."
Then on September 30, 1999, she continued along these same lines:
"My Son is coming and He will be looking to find
those with childlike
and 'little' hearts, those not preoccupied with
the sensationalism and
the complexities of life. He will be
looking
for those who live humble,
modest lives and who strive to love, who are
honest, who are not filled
with malice and guile, who have been faithful
to His Word and who trust
in His promises with childlike filial
confidence.
It is my Son, as the
Child Jesus, who will usher in this new era of
peace, to give you hope
and invite all the world to be enthroned in His
virtues. It is not the
end of the world as you know it but hope for
a new beginning. At the
end of the world my Son, the righteous glorified
Savior will come as
your Just Judge. Therefore do not be
afraid.
Await now His arrival
with great anticipation and joy. There
is tremendous evil in the world
and my little Jesus will be looking to find those
with little and pure
hearts."
From March through May, 2000, Our Lady gave a series of public
messages
that were specifically more challenging to both the local priests in
Emmitsburg and the area residents concerning the historical
significance
of the Emmitsburg area and the new roles and responsibilities to which
they were now being called at this critical point in salvation history.
This series of messages which Michael will now read was met with
considerable resistance and skepticism.
Our Lady explained on March 30, 2000:
"This community is an example to the world of the beauty and power
behind simplicity, littleness and love. For mercy to be fruitful, you
must bare yourself to all people, not just a select few…..The more
this
community gives, the more it will receive. The more resistant
it
becomes, the more struggles it will be faced with. But know,
children,
my Son is not leaving. I am not leaving….I invite you not to
complain
or be concerned, but to be grateful that God Almighty has chosen this
humble place, and His love and mercy will do miraculous things for
the
world."
Then on May 11, 2000, Our Lady placed her appearance in Emmitsburg
in
the context of her plan as it has unfolded over the 20th century:
"I have been waiting for 2000 years to fulfill the plan God the
Father
has commissioned to me to bear the fruits of my Son's redemption.
Through my Immaculate Heart I will obtain for you from my Blessed Son
every grace, justice, charity and peace. What
commenced in Fatima with
my three little children will continue now and
come to fruition here at
the Center of my Immaculate Heart."
Since our last Pittsburgh Conference she also has further promised
what
has been called the unveiling of God's Divine Mercy in Emmitsburg:
On October 21, 1999, Our Lady said:
"This is the place, the Center of my Immaculate
Heart where my Son's
Divine Mercy will be unveiled. In the name
of the Child Jesus I place
the seal of protection against evil upon your
soul, sanctified by grace
for my Son's glorious reign. All hearts
must be purged of iniquity and
renewed in His Love."
And on April 27, 2000, Our Lady encouraged each of her children:
"God loves each one of you very much. I am here for all of you,
not
simply for any one person….God will bless all of you and give you the
grace to share the gift of kindness with others….Thank God above,
little
children, for His great love for you and for picking this most
beautiful, humble place as the Center of my Immaculate Heart; and from
here the unveiling of my Son's Mercy will commence."
One of the most confusing and misunderstood areas of Our Lady's
message
in Emmitsburg has to do with the second coming of Jesus, NOT the final
coming, but the second coming of Jesus in a spiritual Eucharistic
Reign.
On two consecutive weeks in March, 2000, she spoke of this:
First on March 2, 2000: "Jesus will come
a second time and reign….It
will not be His final judgment and coming, for
this next era will be the
Covenant of our Two Hearts, a Eucharistic
spiritual
reign where the
Child Jesus will usher in a kingdom of peace….for
it is the Child Jesus
who represents hope and life for all children
of the world."
Then again on March 9, 2000: "Continue
to
pray and work toward a new
tomorrow when temptations will not affect
you….There
will be a time of
peace and no disease, a time and place where
every human being will live
in unity and come to know the Truth of Jesus
through a Eucharistic
Reign…You will be restored to health….Life will
flourish and the ways of
the Child Jesus will renew your hearts and fill
you with joy. You will
have a long life and happiness….Those who pray
together in the family as
partners of love will march triumphantly into
the era of peace."
Clearly demonstrating that this does not contradict Sacred
Scripture,
we
open our Book of Revelation to chapter 19 and we read:
"Behold, a great white horse, and He who sat upon it is called
Faithful
and True, and with justice He judges and wages war….And He is clothed
in
a garment sprinkled with blood, and his name is called the Word of
God."
And later in Chapter 19 He defeats the beast and the false prophet,
casting them alive into the pool of fire that burns with brimstone,
killing their armies. And then in Chapter 20 we hear of the souls
of
those who had been martyred as witnesses to Jesus and those who did
not
worship the beast and accept his mark, coming to life and reigning
with
Christ for a thousand years, before the final release of Satan and
the
Final Judgment.
Clearly it would appear that Christ is
returning
to reign for some
extended period of time, but not as He will
return
at the end of the
world. However, the Church has clearly
condemned the heresy of
millenarianism which would have Christ returning
in the flesh to
physically reign on earth for some period of
time before the Final
Judgment. The Church has consistently
taught
that any increase in
sanctification that is to occur in this life,
in the time between the
First Coming of Christ at Bethlehem and the Final
Judgment at the end of
the world, any 'era of peace' or 'springtime
of grace', must occur not
through any physical manifestation of Christ
understood in a public
universal sense but through the ordinary agency
of the Holy Spirit who
makes Christ's presence felt among us spiritually
through Sacred
Scripture, through the teaching authority of
the Church, and through the
Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist.
As far back as the 12th century, it was St. Bernard of Clairvaux who
offered a very clear and concise explanation of this matter.
He wrote:
"We know that there are 3 comings of the
Lord.
The third lies between
the other two. It is invisible, while the
other two are visible. In
the first coming, He was seen on earth dwelling
among men. He Himself
testifies that they saw Him and hated Him.
In the Final Coming, 'all
flesh will see the salvation of God, and they
will look upon Him who
they pierced.' The intermediate coming
is a hidden one; in it only the
elect see the Lord within their own selves, and
they are saved. In the
first coming Our Lord came in the flesh and in
our weakness; in this
middle coming, He is our rest and consolation."
In times as recent as the early 1990's, eminent theologian Fr.
Martin
Penassa presented this matter of Christ's millenary reign to Cardinal
Joseph Ratzinger, the Prefect of the Sacred
Congregation
for the
Doctrine of Faith. In response,
Cardinal Ratzinger reassured him that
the matter is still open to discussion. Ratzinger said that "the
Holy
See has not yet made any definite pronouncement
in this regard."
Most recently, just 6 weeks ago, Our Lady began sharing with me more
about this Eucharistic Reign of Jesus. She explained that when
the
"Warning" or
"Illumination
of the Soul" occurs, people will have to
choose to walk with God or not. In August of 1992 Our Lady first
spoke
to me of this illumination in this way:
"The time is coming when every man and woman
on
this earth will know
that God exists. All will have a glimpse
of the state of their soul.
Those seconds will seem like eternity."
(Note that she said a "glimpse"
and not a duplication of the total illumination that occurs at the
time
of death and actual judgment of each person.)
Our Lord too has spoken to me of this same warning. He said:
"I TELL YOU THIS BECAUSE THE DAY IS COMING
WHEN
THE SON OF MAN WILL GIVE
YOU A WARNING OF THE BITTERNESS OF CHASTISEMENT,
WHERE EACH MAN AND
WOMAN ACROSS THE WORLD WILL SEE THE JUDGMENT
OF THEMSELVES
(11/24/91)….THEY WILL SEE THE TRUTH OF THE WORLD
AS IT IS AND WHAT THEY
HAVE MISSED FROM POSTPONING PRAYER AND SERVICE
THROUGH LOVE. BY SEEKING
SELF-GAIN IN THE WORLD THEY WILL SEE WHAT THEY
HAVE DEPLETED FROM THEIR
SOULS THROUGH THE LOSS OF THE TREASURES OF
HEAVEN."
(11/02/95).
Our Lady has recently revealed to me that
those
who choose to live in
God's Divine Will shall be protected under the
seal of His Eucharistic
Reign and will be sustained literally in time
with Jesus 24 hours a day
from one reception of the Eucharist to the
next.
There will be an
instantaneous knowledge and freedom in Our Lord's
Divine Will. Their
wills shall be that of God's unconditionally.
For those who are not
Catholic and those without a knowledge and belief in the True Presence
of Jesus in the Eucharist, there are two possibilities. First,
those
who are open to the Truth of Our Lord's True Presence in the Eucharist
will hear about the Eucharistic Reign and desire to receive Jesus and
to
reconcile with the Church so that they can unite with God under this
seal of holy protection. Secondly, there will be others who
because
of
obstacles and access will be suspended in the Divine Will provided
they
remove themselves from their desires and truly allow His Will to
penetrate the very fibers of their being. This second form of
participation without the sacramental Eucharist, although no less in
its
degree, is possible but more difficult to achieve.
Then there will also be those who choose not to live in His Divine
Will.
Separations will continue, and there will be no lukewarm believers.
They
will continue to rebel against one another and it will not be a pretty
sight.
The Eucharistic Reign involves the Child Jesus. The virtues of
the
Child Jesus, namely His purity, innocence, meekness, gentleness of
heart, honesty and dependence on God, will have a profound, life
changing effect on all people who receive Jesus with filial confidence
and trust. These virtues will manifest themselves in an
over-whelming
and exhilarating way to those who receive Jesus. Our Lady said
it works
like this: Anyone who approaches Jesus
with trust will receive him and
be suspended in an ecstatic joy until the next
time they receive Him in
the Eucharist. Those priests who consecrate
and truly believe in Jesus'
True Presence in the Eucharist will become more
and more like Him in
holiness and radiate all His virtues.
Those priests who do not, and
those people who have trouble now, wanting only consolations and proofs
in signs, will be divided and grow farther and farther apart.
She went
on to say that there is no longer time. We need to now apply
and
utilize the graces God has given to us. The "pruning" which is
now
occurring, must take place so that when the "Warning" comes that the
seal of grace and protection is on His people who truly believe. Yet,
even then God will in some way offer His merciful assistance to invite
all people who have strayed away back to His Most Sacred Heart, which
can only be tapped into by living in His Divine Will through the
virtues
of the Child Jesus.
St. Faustina Kowalska of Poland wrote before she died in the 1930's:
"All the good that is in me is due to Holy
Communion
….I feel this holy
fire has transformed me completely….O Lord, my
heart is a temple in
which you dwell continually….."
As a result of the continual abandonment of
her
human will to the Divine
Will, St. Faustina received the grace of
preserving
the Sacred Species
in her body from one Communion to the next.
Even a soul in mortal sin
becomes a tabernacle for the Blessed Sacrament during the 10-15 minutes
after Holy Communion, but this does not indicate the perfect reign
of
the Divine Will in that person. However, in the soul of a person
who
has totally abandoned the independent use of his or her human will,
such
as was the case with St. Faustina, this preservation of the
Sacred
Species is a striking sign of the Reign of the Divine Will. It
is
noteworthy that in private revelations approved
by the Church only a
handful of persons have received this grace in
addition to St.
Faustina. Mother Mary of Agreda who wrote
the MYSTICAL CITY OF GOD
ascribes this grace to Our Blessed Mother.
Two others identified have
been St. Anthony Maria Claret, the founder of
the Claretians, and the
Servant of God Therese Neumann, the Bavarian
stigmatist. Could this
grace that has been given by God to only a few
in the last 2000 years
become the standard for all who say "YES" to
God?
During the spring and summer of 2000 Our Lady addressed two other
areas
which also heightened the anticipation, the numbers of pilgrims coming
to Emmitsburg, and the tensions in the community. First, she
addressed
the problem of AIDS in the world:
On Mar. 16, 2000: "The AIDS epidemic is a direct attack on the
family
unit, but God in His Mercy shall prevail. Many people may find
it
difficult to connect God's Mercy to AIDS, and many may only see His
Mercy towards the precious souls who suffer from the disease, but truly
the effect of this devastating virus is an act of God's mercy on the
entire human race. It is a reflection of (the effects of) sin
on each
human soul and portrays the struggle which occurs when the precious
gift
of life is denied from its inception."
Then in her very controversial message of July 13, 2000, Our Lady
revisited what she had warned and promised at Fatima in 1917, and once
again drew parallels between Emmitsburg and Fatima. She said:
"I have waited patiently for 2000 years for my
plan to unfold because
God the Father permitted Satan to draw souls
away from His Truth.
Satan's reign is ending this year and now I am
moving swiftly on his
turf to reclaim all those who were deceived and
lost. I am determined
to bring all my children back to my Son….(In
Fatima) I predicted a
future miracle that all might believe, and now
as my plan commences, I
once again predict a sign for this October.
God wished to establish a
world devotion to my Immaculate Heart, and now
my Immaculate Heart will
triumph here at its center….Watch and see for
I am about to meet Satan
on his own turf and extinguish his ways
forever.
Watch and see!"
Much of the information which we have shared with you over the last
few
minutes was beautifully presented in the film, UNBRIDLED MERCY, The
Return of Jesus as a Child, which was released by the Mercy Foundation
last May. This film was both highly acclaimed and controversial,
and
according to statements made by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, was the
primary precipitant of the action subsequently taken by the diocese
on
September 8 last year. Because of the fact that both previous
Vincentian pastors at St. Joseph's Parish in Emmitsburg had been
providing quarterly written reports to Cardinal Keeler in Baltimore
about the events in Emmitsburg since first asked to do so by him in
1994, and because of the fact that we had always complied with any
request the diocese made of us, the Archdiocese had actually since
November, 1993 permitted both the prayer group and the dissemination
of
the weekly messages by the parish itself to continue. However,
both the
challenging nature of the 1999-2000 messages and their subject matter,
as well as the effective and powerful presentation of the material
in
the film UNBRIDLED MERCY, and its wide and rapid dissemination (nearly
10,000 copies in only 4 months over the summer of 2000), placed
increasing pressure on the Archdiocese of Baltimore to do
something.
To
continue to do nothing and allow this to go on in a Catholic Church
in
their diocese before the exposed Blessed Sacrament and in conjunction
with the Sacred Liturgy would suggest their tacit approval of
everything
there contained. To finally launch a formal investigative
commission
would take considerable time, effort and resources on the part of the
Diocese. Instead of either of these two choices, the Archdiocese chose
to exercise their authority in an altogether different way.
Our Lady had forewarned Michael and I throughout the summer of
2000
that the month of September was to be a very difficult time with both
great humiliations and persecutions, but we did not know exactly how
this would play out. The Vincentians had appointed a new Provincial
for
the Eastern Province in September 1999, and he brought in a new
pastor
at St. Joseph's Church in Emmitsburg in July, 2000. Already there
was
considerable speculation that this had set the stage for some type
of
change. Then on Sept. 7, 2000, on what turned out to be the final
Marian Prayer Group in Emmitsburg, Our Lady said in her public message:
"Do not be afraid to step into the darkness of His Passion because
this
is where your victory and glory in my Son are fulfilled. This
is where
you will be able to identify with Him, in your trial of FAITH; and
this
is how you become beautiful and are transformed into His Love…."
FOLLOWING AN OBVIOUSLY TRAUMATIC MONTH IN WHICH OUR LADY'S WARNINGS
FOR
A DIFFICULT SEPTEMBER WERE REALIZED:
Oct. 6, 2000---Drs. Gianna and Michael Sullivan left for private
retreat
in Assisi, Italy. (previously scheduled since the spring.)
Oct. 8, 2000---Pope John Paul II entrusted and consecrated the new
millennium to the Virgin Mary in the company of nearly 1400 cardinals
and bishops in Rome, Italy.
Oct. 8, 2000---In LaVerna, Italy, at the very site where St. Francis
received the stigmata, Gianna Sullivan composed at Our Lady's request
a
poem for Pope John Paul II entitled, "Open Wide the Doors to Christ."
Oct. 12, 2000-Drs. Gianna and Michael Sullivan returned from Assisi
to
Rome to complete the requirements for the Jubilee Indulgence at St.
Peter's Basilica. An
attempt was made by Gianna, after being allowed into the Vatican
administrative
offices by Swiss Guards, to have delivered a note to Bishop Stanislaus
Dziwisz, the
Holy Father's personal secretary, requesting admission to the
Pope's private
Mass on October 13 and the opportunity to present to the Holy Father
the poem
she had written for him. This effort was met with no response.
Oct. 13, 2000---Anniversary of the Final Apparition of Our Lady at
Fatima, Portugal in 1917(following a series of obstacles which only
Our
Lady could remove and negotiate, we were informed that:
Oct. 13, 2000-Arriving by 6 AM at St. Peter's, following a brief
conversation with the Swiss Guard, and after a prolonged
prayerful
wait, the Sullivan's were informed that the Holy Father's private
Mass
was full and they would not be able to attend it. However,
the Holy
Father would meet with them after his Mass. They
were subsequently
escorted into a room where the Pope soon entered and took his seat.
After the Pope had met briefly with those who had been in attendance
at
his Mass, the Sullivans were able to meet with him.
During our meeting Gianna presented the poem she had written, the
FACT
SHEET concerning the mystical events in Emmitsburg, and a picture of
Our
Lady of Emmitsburg.
The Vatican photographer took several pictures during their private
conversation and seven 8 by 10 inch color photos were delivered
to their hotel
before 3 PM tha same afternoon.
Oct. 14, 2000-The Sullivans returned home to the United States
to face both the anticipation and the doubts of many
regarding "the sign".
October, 2000--The Sign
Many believers and skeptics had been watching closely for the
fulfillment of our Lady's prediction through Gianna on July 13, 2000:
Referring to Fatima, Our Lady said, "…..I predicted a future miracle
that all might believe (in Fatima in 1917), and now as my plan
commences, I once again predict a sign for this October."
However, few may remember that Our Lady also said on July 20, one
week
following her prediction of a sign in October:
"Be gentle and show acts of love and charity to others or you will
not
be able to recognize any sign from heaven because of your own pride
and
arrogance."
As October grew to a close, many were disappointed and confused
because
they were not gifted with some extravagant sign from God. Many
were not
satisfied with just the Holy Father's consecration of the new
millennium
to Our Lady on October 8 and (our) the Sullivans' unscheduled
audience
with the Pope on October 13. However, the indifference and fear
in the
hearts of many who for several months in 2000 had been exposed both
these new challenges and gifts from God in Emmitsburg may have dampened
the sign that could have been. Remember also that it has been
reported
that on August 19, 1917 in Fatima, after the children had been
prevented
by the local administrator from being at the Cova for Our Lady's August
13 appearance, Our Lady referred to the actions of the administrator
and
said that because of this interference, the miracle announced for
October in Fatima would be less striking than it would have
been.**Those
who understand how Our Lady has worked throughout history might
recognize that she always bows in obedience to the Church and that
she
would not overtly embarrass the Church following its actions taken
on
September 8. It now appeared that all must continue to walk on
in their
own trial of faith.
Oct-Nov. 2000---Drs. Gianna and Michael Sullivan have maintained a
course of obedience to the Church, prudence and silence, as we continue
serving the healthcare needs of the poor through the Mission of Mercy.
(And it is tonight that we, at Our Lady's request, are here to address
some of the confusion and inaccuracies that have transpired and been
propagated since September 8, as well as to build on what Our Lady
had
previously said.)
Esperanza Agrees on a New Spiritual Age?
For months Esperanza, now 73 and ailing, has indicated that the world
will
enter a "new stage" in the next several years, and has alluded to the
year
2004.
Esperanza has not described the year in apocalyptic terms -- [she]
has
emphasized that it has nothing to do with the end of the world
-- but
rather claims it will be a stepped-up time of awakening, indicating
something that seems more in the spiritual than worldly realm....
"As we get closer, they are going to be clearer," he said.
"Things
are going to be more and more intense as we get closer to 2004."
This coincides with the timing mentioned by Gianna on the video "Unbridled Mercy" where Gianna said that when Pope John Paul II leaves the seat of Peter we will see how bad things will get. (See near future Ned Dougherty) Gianna's daughter was 3 at the time and was told that when her daughter was 7 that this would be evident; timing out with Maria Esperanza's guess of "as we get closer to 2004." Gianna said we should watch for a cashless society and a pope that will allow priests to marry, as signs of the fulfilment of this prophecy.
The insinuation that the Catholic church would possibly fall under misguided leadership and be persecuted terribly at the hands of other Christians seems to be what prompted the bishop of Gianna's diocese to ask that the video no longer be sold, which seems like a logical decision for any bishop. That request of the bishop does not necessarily infer disbelief.
