Mary appeared to 4 children in Garabandal, Spain.
(Not yet officially approved, but very pertinent to possibly imminent events. Although this apparition
has not been officially approved there were many supernatural occurrences associated and the promised “warning” and “chastisement” have been each prophecied by several saints.)
-The children, during ecstacy, maintained
beautiful poses for periods of time not humanly possible.

-The girls were "called" from separate parts of the village, converged at the same time and ran up the rocky hillside backwards and barefooted at speeds at which their brothers could not keep up with even though they wore shoes.
-a prominent promoter of Garabandal, Joey Lomangino, testifies that Saint Padre Pio told
him the Blessed Virgin was appearing at Garabandal and he should go. During one of his visits with Padre Pio Joey was healed of his lost sense of smell by Padre Pio.
-promised a miracle ahead of time, as a sign, a communion host appeared on Conchita's extended tongue at the appointed time in front of hundreds of witnesses, captured on film.
-The girls were directed (by Mary) to return blessed items to the proper recipient, impossible for the girls to know or fake.
-The girls were taught the importance of the Eucharist by Mary and the angel. They then received the Eucharist daily. If a priest was not available to consecrate the host the angel would bring a consecrated host from a tabernacle to give the children. The angel taught the children to recite the Confiteor before reception of the host and the Anima Christi in thanksgiving after receiving.
Garabandal is a small village in northern Spain.
At the time of the apparitions to get to Garabandal one had to climb steep, poor roads and no more
than 300 people lived in Garabandal.
In the evening of June 18, 1961, four girls were playing on the
outskirts of the town - Conchita Gonzalez, Maria Dolores (Mari-loli)
Mazon, Jacinta Gonzalez and Maria Cruz Gonzalez (not related
despite having the same name.) Maria Cruz was eleven, the others
twelve, and all were from poor families.
Suddenly they heard a loud noise, like thunder, and saw before
the bright figure of the Archangel Michael. On the following days the
Archangel appeared to them again in the same place. He announced
that on July 2 they would see Our Lady. This was the beginning of the
On July 2 at six in the evening the girls went to the place where the
Angel had appeared, and to the surprise of the crowd they entered
into ecstasy. Our Lady appeared to them accompanied by two
angels, one being St. Michael. The girls described the vision as
"She is dressed in a white robe with a blue mantle and a crown
of golden stars. Her hands are slender. There is a brown
scapular on her right arm, except when she carried the Child
Jesus in her arms. Her hair, deep nut-brown, is parted in the
center. Her face is long, with a fine nose. Her mouth is very
pretty with lips a bit thin. She looks like a girl of eighteen. She is rather tall. There
is no voice like hers. No woman is just like her, either in the voice or the face or
anything else. " Our Lady manifested herself as Our Lady of Carmel."
After this first apparition there were many more. During 1961 and
1962 Our Lady appeared several times each week. The four girls did
not always receive the apparition together. Sometimes only one, other
times two or three of them saw the vision. Nor was it always at the
same hour of the day. Our Lady appeared many times at night and
even early in the morning, in an attitude of sacrifice and penance, at
the same hours when Our Lord is most offended by the sins of men.
When the visions began, the girls fell instantaneously on their
striking the sharp rocks with a loud noise that was frightening, yet they showed no
signs of injury. The expression on their faces was suddenly
transformed. Their look became extraordinarily beautiful, sweet, one
of profound mysticisim. There are no words that can properly
describe the change. They were completely absorbed in their rapture,
unaware of anyone or any material thing around them except for each
other. They did no react to pricks, burns or blows. All attempts to
distract them failed. Powerful beams of strong light were focused on
them, yet their eyes did not even flicker, blink or show any signs of
discomfort. Quite the contrary, their eyes remained wide open ,
expressing a look of intense joy. However, when the girls returned to
the normal state, they immediately shielded their eyes from those
bright lights which under normal circumstances should have caused
permanent eye damage. During these ecstasies, which lasted from a few minutes to several
hours, time did not seem to count. On many occasions they remained
immobile in off-balance, beautiful "sculptured-like" positions, heads
tilted back, eyes looking up, kneeling on the rocks or bare-legged in
the snow. At the end of the ecstasy, they showed no signs of
excitation or nervousness, just deep, profound peace and joy.
The Miracle of the Host
Above the village is a steep hill on which stands a cluster of 9 pine
trees. "One day," said the girls, "an angel with a golden chalice
appeared to us at "The Pines". He told us to recite the Confiteor and
then he gave us Holy Communion." This wonderful favor happened
many times during those days when the parish priest of the
neighboring town of Cosio could not go to Garabandal. It was
possible to film some of these Communions, using very bright light.
The movements of the lips and tongues of the girls gave the exact idea
of a real Communion. On May 2, 1962, the angel told Conchita that
God would perform a miracle so that all people would believe: they
would see the Sacred Host on her tongue at the moment of
Communion and that she should make this known fifteen days in
advance. On July 18, 1962, the town was crowded with visitors. At
midnight Conchita, who had remained in her home continually
surrounded by visitors, entered into ecstasy and went out into the
street. At a short distance from her house she fell down on her knees
in the midst of the crowd. Lanterns were focused on her. She put out
her tongue upon which nothing was resting, as everyone could see. In
a few moments, a white host appeared on her tongue and remained
there for a few minutes. A businessman from Barcelona, Don
Alejandro Damians, standing less than three feet from the girl, secured
some very good moving pictures. In the film there appeared 79
pictures of the extraordinary scene. This same witness wrote a report
which he submitted to the Bishop of Santander, together with a copy
of the film. The number of witnesses on this occasion was very large:
there were people from different cultures and social classes. Don
Benjamin Gomez, a farmer from Potes, wrote:
"I was standing at less than an arm's
the girl. I saw
very well that her tongue was completely clean of everything.
The girl did not move. Suddenly there appeared on it the
Sacred Host. It was white, shining and resplendent. It reminded
one of the snow when the sun strikes it with its brilliant rays.
The girl's face was beautifully transformed into heavenly
ecstasy. Her face was angelic I can certify that she was there
motionless, moving neither hands nor tongue. In this motionless
position she received the Sacred Host. We had enough time to
contemplate this marvelous phenomenon without any undue
haste, and we were many who saw it. I was an unbeliever until
that day. I am not such a Catholic as to be subject to any
hallucination or imagination. I had not concerned myself about
God until then except to offend Him. I went to confession in
April but previous to that time I had not gone to confession for
The miracle of the host is a true confirmation of the apparitions of Our Blessed Mother
in Garabandal and of the reality of her message. But a still greater miracle has been promised.
The Great Miracle of Garabandal:
Conchita has clearly said that Our Lady has promised a greater
miracle in Garabandal so that all may believe the apparitions and be
obedient to the message. "As the punishment which we deserve for
the sins of the world is great, the miracle must also be a great one, for the world needs it."
It will occur on a Thursday on the feast day
of a saint devoted to the Eucharist, at 8:30 in the evening, and will last for about one
quarter of an hour. It will also coincide with a great event in the Church. The sick who
come to Garabandal on that day will be cured, unbelievers will be converted. There
will remain a permanent sign at the "The Pines" as a proof of Our Lady's
tremendous love for all her children.
"The sign that will remain," says Conchita, "will be able to be
seen, photographed and televised but it will not be able to be
touched. It will appear clearly that it is something not of this
world, but of God."
Conchita wrote: "The warning comes directly from God and will
be visible to the whole world and from any place where anyone
many happen to be. It will be like the revelation of our sins and
it will be seen and felt by everyone, believer and unbeliever
alike irrespective of whatever religion he may belong to. It will
be seen and felt in all parts of the world and by every person."
If we do not pay attention to the message, the punishment
announced by Our Lady will be visited on the whole world after
The miracle. During one of their ecstasies the girls were heard
praying for the innocent children but, nevertheless, they shed
tears at the same time. Since the day they learned about the
punishment they have developed a great spirit of sacrifice.
They pray very much for sinners and for priests. They often
say that if priests are not what they should be many souls will
be lost. Conchita has written: "I cannot reveal what kind of punishment
it is except that it will be a result of the direct intervention of
God, which makes it more terrible and fearful than anything we
can imagine. It will be less painful for innocent babies to die a
natural death than for those babies to die because of the
punishment. All Catholics should go to confession before the
punishment and the others should repent of their sins. When I
saw IT (the punishment), I felt a great fear even though at the
same time I was seeing Our Blessed Mother. The punishment,
if it comes, will come after the miracle"
To the unsuspecting and to the non-believers, the Warning could indeed be
frightening. At the least, it will leave many people shocked and confused
as to what has happened. That is why so many people will seek answers,
and hopefully return permanently, to the Church.

"...I ANNOUNCE TO YOU THAT WHICH YOU WILL PASS THROUGH IS NOW
YOU...THE CONVERSION OF MY APOSTLE PAUL WAS A PRECEDENT SET IN MY WORD.
IT WAS HIS EXPERIENCE OF PRIVATE REVELATION. AS HE WAS BLINDED BY MY
LIGHT HE KNEW HE COULD NO LONGER DENY THE ONE WHOM HE PERSECUTED.
AND NOW ALL WILL BE CAUGHT IN THIS MOMENT OF MERCY AS MY LIGHT
REVEALS ONCE AGAIN THE PERSECUTION OF ME! ..."
Obviously, everyone will know it when this happens. Recent
indicate that it could happen soon, within the next couple years.
This particular event has been predicted for many years, and there is EVERY
reason to believe that the time of fulfillment has arrived.

The Three Phases of Garabandal

The Garabandal events are remarkable in all their
dimensions, from the incredible phenomena of the
girls' ecstasies never before seen in Marian
apparitions to the great supernatural events that
have been prophesied. Another way in which
Garabandal is unique among Marian apparitions is
the long time it's taking for its completion.
One could argue that Fatima is also not yet
complete, as we still await the triumph of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary and the promised era of
peace. While that may be true, the events that
took place in Fatima ended in 1917. The Miracle
promised at Garabandal is to take place in
Garabandal, the same locale as the 1961-65
events, and is the culmination of them. When all
is said and done, Garabandal will not only have
spanned two centuries, but two millennia.
Because of the long lapse of time before its
fulfillment, Garabandal can be divided into three
phases: the time of the apparitions; the time for
the spread of the Message; and the time of the
final supernatural events, namely the Aviso (Warning) and Miracle.
THE FIRST PHASE
June 18, 1961, marked the beginning of the first
phase when St. Michael appeared to the
visionaries in the calleja. After nine more
visits by the angel, the Blessed Virgin appeared
on July second and subsequently hundreds of times
thereafter until the close of the apparitions on
November 13, 1965. This four-year span can also
be subdivided into the period of frequent
apparitions, which lasted from the beginning
until January, 1963, and the time of infrequent
visions from that time until November, 1965.
During this second period, only Conchita had
visions, although both she and Mari Loli experienced locutions.
Even though Conchita did have one final
locution in February 1966, the 1960s events are
generally considered to have ended on November
13, 1965, the last apparition of the Blessed
Virgin. We might also call this the Marian phase
of Garabandal since the last phase has to do with God's direct intervention.
With the end of the first phase, the Blessed
Virgin completed Her mission to announce an
important Message and She did all that She could,
through a spectacular display of phenomena, to
insure that the Message truly was from Heaven and
therefore ought to be heeded.
THE SECOND PHASE: SPREAD OF THE MESSAGE
Dividing the overall Garabandal event into three
phases is certainly done arbitrarily; there are
no hard and fast rules, and there is some
overlapping of phases. Even during the first
phase, after the announcement of the first
Message on October 18, 1961, it was the Virgin's
wish that the Message begin to spread at that
point. There was even a lull in the events
through most of the 1963-64 period for its
propagation, but that did not happen. So, in Her
second and final Message of June 18, 1965, Our
Lady began with the complaint that little had
been done to make Her
known. But the real overlapping of the first and
second phases, according to our division, can be
seen with the announcement of the second Message
six months before the last apparition of Our
Lady. Those who were present for the reading of
the Message on the day following Conchita's
ecstasy, were deeply effected and some started to do something about it.
Today, through the efforts of those who
answered the call and the organizations that have
been established specifically for this purpose,
the Message of Garabandal has spread and
continues to spread throughout the world.
BUT WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG?
Here we are now 37 years later and still in the
spreading-the-Message phase. Why is it taking so
long to get to the final, supernatural events
stage? There are two answers that come to mind.
The first is the importance that the Message
reach as many people as possible. In the first
Message, which is really the message that the
Blessed Virgin came to deliver, 51 percent of the
text deals with the Chastisement. It is
imperative that people know what fate awaits them
if there is not a universal amendment of life.
The second answer istechnology. The Blessed
Virgin knew that in time there would be
advancements in communications that would make it
possible to spread the Message far more widely
than ever before through cable and satellite
television, video cassettes and most recently, the Internet.
WHEN WILL IT END?
When will the second phase end and how close are
we to the third and final phase of Garabandal? We
can't give definite answers to those questions,
but what we can say is that the phase for
spreading the Message will end when we can no
longer do it, for whatever reason, whether it be
a general falling away of belief in Garabandal,
which has been predicted, and/or the arrival of
the pre-Warning tribulation/persecution period.
But even aside from anything dramatic, there
are telltale signs that we are approaching the
end of the second phase: the age and health of
John Paul II, who is the Pope who will see the
Miracle; the incredible downward moral spiral of
formerly Christian societies which seems to
accelerate with each passing day; the serious
problems in the Church, especially regarding the
Holy Eucharist where an estimated 60-70 percent
of Catholics in the U.S. no longer believe in the
Real Presence (a trend like this cannot continue
if the Church is going to existand we know it will).
Unlike the overlapping between the first and
second phases, between the second and third there
is a gap and in this gap is the pre-Warning
period, a time of great distress when, because of
the raging persecution, the Church will seem to
have disappeared.[Interview with Mari Loli, NEEDLES Magazine, Autumn 1975.]
We do not know how widespread this
tribulation will be nor how long it will last,
but there can be no question that it was
predicted at Garabandal. Three of the visionaries
have spoken of it and have informed us that the
name the Blessed Virgin gave to it was
"communism." Some may find that a little hard to
believe. Isn't communism dead? Apparently not.
One prominent figure in the Garabandal movement
claims that the tribulation has already happened
and that it was embodied in the Soviet-style,
Iron Curtain communism that afflicted Eastern
Europe throughout most of the 20th century. This
hypothesis, however, does not stand up when
placed next to what the visionaries have told us.
In 1979, Jacinta Moynihan was interviewed by
Frenchmen Jacques Serre and Ramon Perez. Here is
one of their questions and Jacinta's answer:
Q. Do you recall anything about a great tribulation, communism or Russia?
A. Yes, it was an invasion, well, something which
seemed to me like an invasion; something that was
a great evil in which communism played a great
part, but I no longer remember which countries or
what region was stricken. The Blessed Virgin
insisted on telling us to pray (that it be
averted). These difficult events will take place
before the Warning because the Warning itself
will take place when the situation will be at its worst.
PHOTO: Jacinta in Garabandal in 1999 offers a
crucifix kissed by the Blessed Virgin to a
visitor. She has said that the Warning will come
when the situation is at its worst.
In another interview, Mari Loli said
essentially the same thing, that the Warning
would come "when we need it the most."
In light of the above, is this excerpt taken
from an article written for the Homiletic and
Pastoral Review, May 1983, by Fr. Joseph Brennan,
O.C.S., in which the author summarized the
prophetic statements made by Saints, Blesseds and Popes regarding our times:
They foretell a time of unprecedented and
terrible confusion and suffering unlike anything
ever experienced in human history. It will affect
every area of human life. Everything on earth,
including the earth itself, will be shaken to its
core. Many institutions will never rise again though they be very ancient.
Christianity will undergo its most severe
test of yet. There will be many casualties, many
purifications. Such confusion will reign that it
will appear that Christianity has almost vanished.
But then, as if to fulfill what Jesus said,
"Unless those days be shortened no flesh shall
survive," there will be a direct Divine
intervention, both amazing and terrible, that
will completely reverse the course of world
events. This intervention occurs in response to
the prayers, sufferings and outcries of millions of afflicted humanity.
As a result of all this there will be a
turning to God that will match the apostasy from
God that preceded it, with the result, as Our
Lady said at Fatima, that "an era of peace will
be granted to humanity." This will be a peace
such as the world has never known and it will
endure, apparently, for a considerable period.
THE FINAL PHASE
The final phase will begin with the Warning.
There are some today who say the Warning does not
belong exclusively to Garabandal since it had
been predicted by Blessed Anna Maria Taigi
(1769-1837) and possibly St. Edmund Campion
(1540-1581). But there clearly is a difference
between prophecies made of a future event by
those who lived in former centuries, and an event
being announced for those who will experience it
in their lifetime. And who ever spoke of this
event until Garabandal? It was Garabandal that
made it known, revealed of what it will consist,
and gave it a time frame. Mari Loli knows the
year when it will occur. Furthermore, to take
this event out of the context of Garabandal would
be to overlook its purpose of preparing the world for the great Miracle.
The Warning is very much a part of the
Garabandal events and will initiate the final
phaseand more. Conchita has said that "when you
see the Warning you'll know you have opened up the end of time."
Within a twelve-month period after the
Warning will come the Miracle. Conchita has
expressed her opinion that the two events will be close together.
With the Miracle comes the end of the
Garabandal events (excluding the conditional
Chastisement) and we can all look forward to the
fulfillment of Our Lady's words that when the
Miracle happens, "all will believe." •
